Core Competencies

September 17, 2016

These competencies as part of the Provincial Curriculum are the major reason I was attracted to teach in BC in the first place. These changes began to be rolled out a few years ago and more officially implemented in the last two years. For me they represent a fundamental shift in BC's progressive attitude toward pedagogy and are a major step in what I think is a great direction.

These kinds of ideas were SO radical 10 years ago when I went to teachers college that when I went to do an internship in an alternative school I was told I would never get a job in the regular school system if I attended that internship. Figuring out for myself if this was true or not was not very difficult and led me on a path of profound growth in alternative education, recreation and community engaged arts facilitation which led me to where I am today. Attitudes have changed so much so in 10 years that in my first teaching job interview, the interviewer straight up said to me that my ideas are not revolutionary anymore. My jaw dropped and I felt offended at first, but then I was happy! This meant that I was not the odd one out anymore pushing for alternative teaching methods etc! No one even bats an eye when I say my goal is to revolutionize the school system. Core Competencies

The core competencies are the intellectual, personal, and social skills that all students need to develop for success in life beyond school. B.C. has identified three core competencies as essential for all learners:

  • Communication

  • Thinking

  • Personal and social competency

Core competencies are directly related to students becoming educated citizens. Read about the core competencies, including profiles and illustrations.
